‘Do you know your Why? The purpose, cause, or belief that inspires you to do what you do?’ Simon Senek
These are the questions posed by the public speaker and ethnographer Simon Senek in his TED Talk ‘Why good leaders make you feel safe’. The question Why is something that we should all ask ourselves to understand what drives us and what is our purpose in life. For us artists, in particular, is important to understand our Why mainly because the answer will guide us beyond ourselves and into service to others, which is where the true power of art lies.
Understanding your Why sets you on more direct path in your life and your art practice. In art education specifically the concept of Why is not even addressed and this is highly problematic. Many young artists graduating from art schools want to get out in the world and make a difference, but are not clear on their Why and get caught up in the fashion of a misguided art system that support what I describe as the artist’s ego. But since the topic of today’s blog is finding your why, I will not say more and let you enjoy the fascinating talk by Senek and ponder upon your Why. Would love to hear your comments below, what is your why?
Stay put for the next blog post for those who are interested and would like to learn more about the artist’s ego trap and how to avoid it.
